Simferopol, Ukraine — January 18, 2012

ROUNDTABLE DISCUSSION ON THE ACTIVITY OF CIVIL SOCIETY IN UKRAINE

On January 18 in Simferopol, Ukraine a roundtable was held on the topic of “Civil Society in Ukraine: Actions to ensure the development of democracy and European integration in Ukraine at the State and regional level”. The roundtable discussion took place at the Center for Intercultural Education and Tolerance, which is based in the Crimean Ethnographic Museum in Simferopol.

The event was supported by the International Renaissance Foundation in preparation for the Citizens' Assembly Forum of Ukraine (CAF) to be held in Kiev in late February. The topic of the forum's discussion in February will be: "The crisis of democracy in Ukraine and the position of civil society".

Simferopol, Ukraine — 22 December, 2011

ROUND TABLE ON GOVERNMENT ACTIVITIES TO COMBAT MANIFESTATIONS OF INTOLERANCE IN UKRAINIAN SOCIETY

On December 22, 2011 in Simferopol a round table discussion took place on "The coordination of law enforcement, executive, government and civil society organizations to combat manifestations of intolerance in Ukrainian society". The round table was the final event for the project "Management of inter-ethnic relations in Crimea by increasing the capacity of prosecutors in combating manifestations of intolerance in society", which is implemented by the independent Ukrainian Center for Political Studies (Kiev) and the Integration and Development Center for Information and Research (Simferopol) with the support of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.

The roundtable was attended by representatives of executive authorities of the Verkhovna Rada of Crimea and representatives from the Prosecutor's Office, Interior Ministry and Security Services.

Simferopol, Ukraine — 17-18 December 2011

EDUCATIONAL CONFERENCE TO EXCHANGE EXPERIENCE ON THE SCHOOL COURSE "CULTURE OF GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD" AND FOR THE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT OF THE COURSE'S TEACHERS. THE LAST METHODICAL TRAINING WORKSHOPS HELD SINCE 2008-2010

The Integration and Development Center for Information Research Center held this education conference as part of the project "Support for the development of intercultural education in Crimea" (implemented with the support of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities). Teachers involved in the teaching of the course "Culture of Good Neighborhood" took part in the conference during the 17th and 18th December 2011.

The conference was attended by over 50 participants. Developers of the course, including the course author Margaret Aradzhioni, presented new manuals that were prepared and published during the previous year of the project. In addition, new materials and exercises for the development of cultural sensitivity and school mediation were also presented. The materials were made available on CD, and included three new video tutorials on the traditional arts and crafts of Crimea.

Simferopol, Ukraine - 9-11 December 2011

TRAINING FOR PROSECUTORS DEDICATED TO COMBATING MANIFESTATIONS OF INTOLERANCE AND HATE CRIME IN SOCIETY

The 3 day training event for prosecutors was held as part of the project "Management of inter-ethnic relations in Crimea with prosecution in combating manifestations of intolerance in society", which is being implemented by the independent Ukrainian Center for Political Studies (Kiev) and the Integration and Development Center for Information and Research (Simferopol) with the support of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities.

The main objective of this project was to improve the capacity of prosecutors in Crimea to counter intolerance in society and create early warning procedures for conflict situations. The training included presentations on the following topics: "Examination of hate crimes by international and regional standards and the local legal framework"; "General assessment of the problem of xenophobia in Ukraine from the perspective of law enforcement"; "Characteristics of hate crimes"; "Hate Speech in the information space of Ukraine"; "Police activity regarding policies for preventing xenophobia and hate crimes"; and others.

 

Alushta, Ukraine - 25-27 November 2011

CRIMEAN SCHOOL OF CITIZEN JOURNALISM

The Crimean school of citizen journalism took place in Alushta as part of the project "New Media in the service of civil society"".

The project was organized by the Integration and Development Center for Information and Research and sponsored by the International Renaissance Foundation. The aim of the project was to bring together numerous facets of Crimean society and have them learn about the process of creating, collecting and disseminating relevant information for the greater public and in doing so, drawing attention to a wide range of pressing problems within Crimean society.

25 participants took part in the School, including representatives from NGOs and Crimean media outlets. Journalists and NGO representatives from throughout Ukraine and Crimea acted as the teachers for the school. They facilitated discussions by participants on socially important topics, such as: "models of decision making in the field of social policy"; "public opinion on radio and television"; "political debate in the media"; "modern digital technologies (new media) — a tool for public participation in local government"; "projects (models) of civic journalism"; and "the challenges and ways to overcome hate speech".

 

Simferopol, Krasnoperekopsk, Kerch, Ukraine - 8-26 November, 2011:

FIVE-DAY WORKSHOPS FOR PRESCHOOL TEACHERS DELIVERED IN THE THREE CITIES OF THE CRIMEA

A series of training seminars for preschool teachers involved in the "Culture of Good Neighborhood" tolerance education course, took place from the 8th to 26th November in the three Crimean cities of Simferopol, Kerch and Krasnoperekopsk. The workshops, which lasted five days each, were attended by pre-school teachers, music teachers, school psychologists and methodologists from Simferopol, Kerch and the Krasnoperekopsk region. As well as hands on knowledge gained from the training sessions, the seminar participants also received literature from the school programs "Crimean wreath", "Know the Crimea together", and "Travelling thru Crimea together".

Simferopol, Bakhchisaray, Belogorsk - 14-24 November, 2011:

PUBLIC ORGANIZATION "MAMAY" PUT PERFORMANCES IN THE CRIMEA ON UKRAINIAN – CRIMEAN TATAR FRIENDSHIP

The NGO "Mamay" in conjunction with the theatre studio of Vladimir Zavalniuk performed a show devoted to Ukrainian – Crimean Tatar relations in six schools throughout Crimea. Organizational support for arranging the performances was provided by NGOs: "The Council of Teachers" (Bakhchisaray) and "The Integration and Development Center for Information and Research" (Simferopol). The project was supported by the International Renaissance Foundation.

Belogorsk, Ukraine - 14-21 November, 2011:

A "WEEK OF TOLERANCE" TOOK PLACE IN BELOGORSK DURING THE WEEK OF 14TH NOVEMBER AT SCHOOL

The school's motto is "Tolerance — the road to peace". Throughout the week numerous activities related to tolerance took place at the school. The activities included: tolerance themed performances; forum theatre; article writing; video, literary, and musical presentations; a roundtable to discuss tolerance; and a festival called "The palette of cultures in Crimea" to celebrate Crimea's rich and diverse cultural heritage.

During the "Week of tolerance" a competition called "Crimean Cuisine" also took place. The competition saw students from different classes prepare and present the national dishes of different people living in Crimea. In addition, the latest issue of the school newspaper was dedicated to the International Day of Tolerance.

Simferopol & Sevastopol, Ukraine: 6th - 9th October 2011

From 6th - 9th October 2011 in Sevastopol, Ukraine at the Hotel Aquamarine there will be an international scientific-practical conference called "Prevention of Violent Conflicts and Peace Education in Multicultural Societies”.

Participants of the conference are representatives of public organizations, experts, academics and researchers in the field of cultural studies, political science, psychology, sociology, and history. There will also be representatives of the Office of the OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities, the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Crimea, the Polish Embassy in Ukraine and various organizations that work to combat racism and xenophobia. In total, the conference will be attended by more than eighty people from twenty countries, including: Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Belarus, Moldova, Romania, Turkey, Netherlands, Greece, Israel, Australia, Azerbaijan, Canada, UK, Kenya, USA, Philippines, Japan, Montenegro, Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan.

The conference is sponsored by the Crimean NGO, “Integration and Development Center for Information and Research”, in partnership with the network of civil society "Global Partnership for the Prevention of Armed Conflict", the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of Crimea, the Crimean branch of the Institute of Innovation and Technology of the Ministry of Education and Science, Youth and Sports of Ukraine, the Crimean branch of the A.Yu Krymsky Institute of Oriental Studies at the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Crimean Republic Institute "Ethnographic Museum", and the Information and Methodological Center for Intercultural Education and Tolerance.

The conference will discuss topics such as:

1) Learning a culture of peace in multiethnic communities.

2) Media and Communication: The possibility of creating a culture of peace and preventing violent conflict.

3) Methods of the culture of peace and tolerance development, and diagnosing of their effectiveness. The role of the school curriculum and teaching aids in the prevention of violent conflict and the formation of tolerance in society.

4) Public administration and civil society in formulating and implementing identity policies and conflict prevention in multicultural societies.

5) Intercultural communication and cultural dialogue in a multicultural society. Research and popularization of experience of the Neighbourhood in multi-ethnic regions.

6) Preventative efforts to reduce the level of xenophobia, racism and anti-Semitism in society.

There will also be presentations on the experience of innovative educational projects aimed at developing social competence in children and adults. As well as the experience of interaction between authorities, academic institutions and non-governmental organizations working toward the development of tolerance in a multicultural society (within the framework of regional, national and trans-boundary cooperation).

SUMMARY:

The conference is made possible by the Max van der Stoel award, which was awarded to the Integration and Development Center in 2009. The award was established in 2001 by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in honour of Max van der Stoel (1924 - 2011) - a prominent Dutch statesman and the first OSCE High Commissioner on National Minorities. The prize is a royalty-free fund that is allocated to support the High Commissioner in conflict regions. Since the creation of the award it has been given to four organizations: the Latvian Centre for Human Rights and Ethnic Studies (2003), International Historical, Educational and Charitable Society Human Rights "Memorial" (Russia, 2005), European Roma Rights Centre (Romania, 2007), and the Integration and Development Center for Information and Research (Ukraine, 2009).
